Helping the Strays of today become the Pets of tomorrow
In 2010 our rescue organization was founded to provide a safe and nurturing environment for unwanted, abandoned, lost, and mistreated pets until they can be placed into loving homes. Our cats and dogs come to us from all kinds of environments and situations. This includes feral animals, pets surrendered by their owners and transfers from the ASPCA and RCMP.
We are a non-profit animal rescue based just outside of Edmonton that is supported entirely by volunteers and private contributions! Through proactive intervention, public education, fundraising events, and community outreach, the Barrhead Animal Rescue Society seeks to promote respect for all life by breaking the cycle of abuse, neglect, and pet overpopulation in our communities.
It is our greatest pleasure to see our fosters and adoptive families give new lives and affection to the animals from our rescue. Please be sure to check out our featured adoptable animals below, as well as our feline and canine adoptable pages on the site. We look forward to answering any of your questions!

Foster Homes Needed!
What is a foster home?
It is a home that provides an animal with temporary respite; a place to recover and adjust to living life in a stable and loving environment, making the transition easier for the animal to prepare for their forever home.
All costs including food and veterinary care are covered by the Barrhead Animal Rescue Society. The need is great for more foster homes. If you think you could offer your home for fostering, please click the "Apply Now" button below to apply!
Why Adopt?
Excited to bring a new pet into the home but don't know where to begin the search? Giving some thought to adoption is an excellent way to start. Shelter animals are usually making the best from a tough situation, either being rescued from living a stray life or surrendered from their families. You have the ability to gift a new life to the canine or feline of your choice and become a part of their story.
Are you looking for a particular breed of dog or cat? While there are many mixed breeds of animals being rescued some shelters are known to specialize in specific breeds and nearly a third of animals who end up in shelters are purebred.
Animals in shelters are often fostered for some time before finding their forever home, which means the rescue volunteers will have spent a lot of time getting to know the animals in care, and will be able to assist you in finding your ideal pet with the right temperament and perfect personality. Rescued animals are also fully vetted, sterilized, dewormed, vaccinated and microchipped before you bring them home, saving you many out of pocket expenses.
For more information on how to get started on adopting an animal, please visit our adoption pages and check out our featured adoptables below where you will discover our current canines and felines in care who are waiting for a family to call their own.
JASPER
Jasper is a fun, playful 6-year-old mixed breed who loves humans (great with kids too!). He likes all kinds of toys, especially squeaky toys, and is just fine with car rides. He eats a fish-based diet for some skin allergies, and would prefer to be the only animal in the house so he can soak up all the love and attention you have to give!
LYNX
Lynx is 7 years old and a BARS original! He is a shy boy at first but once he warms up to his home and people he is happy to show his belly and will even accept belly rubs. Lynx has diabetes which is well controlled by twice-daily insulin injections and scheduled feeding times, but he isn't bothered by any of this! Lynx would make a wonderful addition to a calm home for his golden senior years!
STEVEO
Steveo loves to be out and about--car rides, walks, even a nice big backyard to run around in are totally his jam! He is loyal, smart and cuddly and reportedly a very Good Boy. Steveo's ideal home is one where he can have his people all to himself and reflect all the love he gets back to them. He has lots of energy and would be a great buddy for an active home!
